Definite sign that it is Spring? Tennis, baby.
I'm so excited because I'm meeting up with my cousin Jeff (cousin Rachael's husband, actually) and we're going to go play some tennis tonight! We've been saying we were going to start playing for a while now and haven't gotten around to it due to the general business of life, including the fact that Jeff and Rachael have twins that are now just starting to crawl, therefore upping the insanity factor in their lives by quite a bit, I'd imagine. I know for me, I've been trying to be really good about getting in a workout every night, especially since my diet is going NOWHERE, so I've been kind of hesitant to do anything on a weeknight so that I can squeeze in the workouts. The routine keeps me sane, and keeps me going. But, I'm absolutely counting tennis as a workout, and besides, Jeff hauled off and entered us into a tournament in August - YIKES! - so we HAVE to play now. I'm hoping for about twice a week. I'm just excited because I played tennis in high school, and in a pretty ho-hum life of doing pretty non-spectacular things, tennis was the one thing I was ever good at, and I have desperately missed playing over the last thirteen or fourteen years (who's counting, right?). I think Jeff thinks that I can still play; hope he likes surprises! I mean, I've batted the ball around here and there a few times over the years, but never seriously, and over time, not all that well. It's like riding a bike; I haven't forgotten, but it doesn't mean I can do the "Look Ma, no hands!" tricks anymore. Plus, I'm nowhere near close to even a quarter of the shape I was in when I played all those years ago, and tennis involves a lot of running. Unfortunately, the only running I've been doing over the past few years is in the Deathscort back and forth between fast-food joints. It should be borderline clownish, but what the hell - it'll still be fun.
The tournament is in late August, based on levels one through seven, from lowest to highest skill level. I'm hoping we can get ourselves to about a level three by then. I definitely think the matching Serena Williams tennis rackets Jeff got us will help. I wouldn't mind throwing in a few Serena Williams arm muscles, but I'll settle for the rackets at this point.
Yes, I will be wearing shorts. IN PUBLIC. No, I am definitely not happy about it.
